A US precipitation map is used to see how much rain falls in the United States. The amount of rain that falls in the United States obviously varies. There are as little as 2.3 inches of rain each year in Death Valley, California.
However, with a peak of 460 inches, Mount Waialeale in Hawaii receives the greatest precipitation. With an average annual precipitation of 9.5 inches, Nevada is the driest state in the US. However, Hawaii is the wettest state in the US, with an average annual rainfall of 63.7 inches (1618 millimeters).

However, just a few localities in Hawaii are representative of the state’s average. Many weather stations on the islands have an annual rainfall of fewer than 20 inches (508 mm), while others have well over 100 inches (2540 mm). The map depicts the total amount of precipitation that has fallen. The precipitation imagery interprets the intensity levels of the NOWrad mosaic radar into rainfall estimates each hour to present precipitation estimates in colorized contoured bands.
These daily summaries show the total amount of precipitation from 1200 GMT yesterday to 1200 GMT today (daily) or from 1200 GMT 7 days ago to 1200 GMT today (weekly). The wettest sections of the country are dark blue on the precipitation map (bottom), with annual average precipitation of 80 inches or more. A light green dominates the driest regions of the country.

A rain gauge is commonly used to measure rainfall. It is measured with an accuracy of up to 0.1 mm (0.01 in) and is expressed as the depth of water that gathers on a flat surface. Rain gauges are typically positioned at a consistent height above the ground, which varies by country. Gauges are divided into two categories: Daily or monthly measurements are taken with storage rain gauges.
Recording rain gauges assess the intensity of rainfall using a tipping bucket that will only tip when a specified level of water is in it. The advice can be recorded using an electrical switch. The map below allows you to compare annual average precipitation totals between states visually.
