The US Hardiness Zone Map is an excellent reference tool. The USA Hardiness Zone Map can assist you in determining which perennials, trees, and shrubs can withstand the climate in your area.  Consider the hardiness zones that a specific plant is rated for as a suggestion rather than an assurance that it will thrive in your area. Plants that can withstand the cold in each USDA Hardiness Zone are listed below. Only the coldest zone for each listed plant is taken into account; some of the plants will not live in much warmer climates. Always double-check with the plant’s originator to see if it’s suitable for your climate. A hardiness zone is a geographical area characterized by a specific range of annual low temperatures that is important for many plants’ survival. The USDA system was created to help American gardeners and landscapers. The majority of the warmer zones (zones 9, 10, and 11) in the United States are found in the deep southern half of the country and along the southern coastal borders. Hawaii (up to 12 zones) and Puerto Rico (up to 12 zones) have higher zones (up to 13). The southern middle zone of the continent as well as the central coastal sections are included in the middle zones (zones 8, 7, and 6).

Due to being more continental, especially further west with higher cyclic temperature variations, the far northern portion of the central interior of the mainland has some of the coldest zones (zones 5, 4, and a small area of zone 3) and often has a much less consistent range of temperatures in winter, and thus the zone map has its limitations in these areas. In Alaska, lower zones can be found (down to 1). Because of the low latitude and relatively consistent weather in Florida, the Gulf Coast, and southern Arizona and California, severe cold spells are uncommon compared to the usual in those places.

The Arnold Arboretum map replaced the USDA hardiness map in 1960 until 1990 when the USDA hardiness map was updated using data from between 4,800 and 14,500 weather stations by the US Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the US National Arboretum. Gardeners may now use hardiness zone maps to trace zone lines throughout the country to see which plants they might be able to grow in their own area.
